Finger-pointing is a common practice among our people.
Finger-pointing often has a negative connotation. Behaviors, habits, actions are pointed at to deny them and to make them out of the ordinary. The result? Marginalization. Finger-pointing leads to discomfort and marginalization, not to finding solutions. Finger-pointing brings to the fore the problem, not the solution or reflection on the cause, the root of the problem to find the solution and highlight it.
Finger-pointing: what is the problem?
Negative behaviors that do not add value to people, such as: excessive spending, excessive borrowing, can be highlighted and pointed at. As every behavior is generated by a problem, I believe that, rather, we make people aware of these aspects, we make them aware. Awareness is the first step to solving for a better life. Don’t you think so?!
I have observed, from experience, that if you tell a person who spends a lot: “Stop spending so much!”, the person becomes refractory towards you, just as if a doctor tells a person he sees smoking: “Just smoke or you’ll get cancer!”, that person will hate doctors and will no longer go to the doctor. Why? Because none of them showed empathy, were determined to find out what makes the person spend a lot or smoke. Both practices are unhealthy and lead to financial inconvenience.
What is the solution?
People prefer to point fingers at negative behaviors to blame them, and on TV, in commercials, we see the opposite finger pointing: “Can’t you pay attention at work because you have a big expense? Come to x (company) and we’ll give you the money you need to pay it.” And here is the solution! A solution, the right one, in the short term. People like to receive solutions.
I invite you to think about solutions when you see a person with a problem and to find viable solutions, not apparent ones,, the short term ones. People don’t like to be told what they are doing wrong, they want to be helped. People like to be understood and to be given options, so that they can choose. A person to whom you have drawn attention to his inappropriate behavior, even if he does not realize what you have told him at the moment, will realize it later.
Thus, as you may have noticed, I always highlight the solutions: saving in all its forms. I want to make people aware of the power of saving. I want to make people financially healthy in the long term. I want them to have more money, to afford more things and not to be dependent on a job or a bank.
What is important to you, actually?
I invite you to grow the community of people aware of their goals, of their behaviors.
